Bessie the Thespian!

Introducing Bessie Smithereens.

She blocks! She jams! She captains! She studies law! She frequently pushes the derby PG-13 rating (if I had a nickel for every photo that didn’t get put on the web….) And now, she acts!

Our own Ms. Smithereens will be in a play!

PREMIERE OF “WELCOME TO CHALMETTE”

SET FOR

Wednesday & Friday, MARCH 7 & 9

Gripping Story of how Chalmette, LA Residents Experienced Hurricane Katrina and the Resulting Murphy Oil Spill

The 12th Annual Tulane Law Environmental Conference will feature a 2-hour theatrical performance of the play, Welcome To Chalmette, documenting the Hurricane Katrina Murphy Oil Spill (what is the largest residential oil spill in the history of mankind involving 900,000 gallons of crude oil), and its effects on the lives of St. Bernard Parish residents. Welcome to Chalmette will be performed Wednesday, March 7, at 7pm and again Friday, March 9, at 6:30pm at the Freeman Auditorium, located in the Woldenberg Arts Center on Tulane University’s Uptown Campus.

Playwright, Mary Nagle wrote this documentary style play after conducting more than thirty interviews with resident survivors of the Murphy Oil spill and Hurricane Katrina in Chalmette, LA. The play documents their stories and their lives—before, during, and after the hurricane.

The play will be performed by a group of Tulane Law students, is directed by second-year law student Lauren Checki, and is co-sponsored by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade.
There is no charge for admission, but there is a suggested $5 donation that will be donated to the community of Chalmette to aid in the cleanup and rebuilding efforts.

For more information regarding the performances, or to reserve tickets, please contact Mary Nagle, at mnagle@tulane.edu or at (913) 486-1939.

“For me,” Bessie states, “the play is about what happens when different value systems, with equally valid ethics and opinions regarding law and the place for lawsuits, intersect. My kind of hometown meets my future professional network.”

Please come out and not only support Bessie, but a very important and informational event. We will see you out there!
