The tournament was great, and next season will be even better. That bell will be proudly displayed at our warehouse, and will look even nicer after we powerwash the floors this week. Looking forward to an actual off season, then some intense training post-carnival. There is talk of cooler jumping for agility. Shout out to MSRG and RSRD, who brought some seriously amazing teamwork and energy.

Fall 2011 Try Outs: FAQ

We're heading into our 7th season, and we are looking for strong athletes to join our ranks!

Roller derby is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, endurance-based sport that takes lots of physical and mental ability, time, and sheer dedication.

Details regarding our skate clinics and October 8th try out are here.

Do I need to know how to skate?
No, but you should at least be able to stand on skates comfortably and move in a forward direction without white-knuckling the rail. Success in derby requires much more than mere skating skills and BERG has benefited from many a diamond in the rough.

How can I prepare?
First off, get to know us and our sport! Come see our games to gain an understanding of what's involved – tickets are available on our website. Sign up for our mailing list to get an idea of what our schedule is like and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. BERG is a proud member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Visit their site to read the rules, familiarize yourself with the history, and get a sense of what we mean by our WFTDA motto, “Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.”

Second, cross train. Derby is hyper athletic and while we’ll definitely whip you into shape, you’ll do yourself a favor by meaning fit from the jump. Anytime Fitness has programs and equipment to get you in shape! Then skate, skate, and skate some more! The more comfortable you are on your skates, the faster you will pick up the game. There are a handful of local rinks with open hours where you can rent quad skates on work on basic skills. Skate Country Westbank and Airline Ska te Center are two of them.

What happens at Tryouts?
Tryouts will include the following: a group warm up, skills testing, and an interview. Skaters will be reviewed by the training committee and cuts will be made during both the skating warm up (but only in the case in which a skater is a danger to herself or others or simply cannot stand on a pair of roller skates) and the skills testing.

The skaters who make the final cut will be asked to participate in short interviews with representatives from Big Easy Rollergirls. The representatives will be looking to gauge your schedule, your goals, whether you’d fit on the league, and whether you can make the time commitment to playing for BERG, etc.

What will I be tested on?
Some of the things we will be looking for in tryouts are:

Basic Skills:
Forward skating
Gliding on one foot
Crossovers
Balance and Agility
Plow and T-Stops
Single Knee, Double Knee, and Four Point falls
Skating in proximity to others

Endurance:
Number of laps in 2 minutes

Other:
Good Attitude
Basic knowledge of the sport
Ability to listen and apply new knowledge
Ability to picks up skills quickly
Time commitment – Fresh Meat practices Monday evening 6:30-8:30 & Saturday morning 8:00-10:30

What equipment will I need for clinics and try-outs?
Every skater will be required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a mouthguard and quad roller skates. We will have limited gear to loan out. A word to the wise: please do not invest in $500 worth of gear until you have received notification that you made the grade. Many of our league’s best skaters tried out in rental skaters and the Academy Sports special (bike helmet, roller blade pads).

For insurance purposes, you will be required to sign a waiver for tryouts. It's a very standard waiver and we'll have lots of copies for you to look over and sign.

What happens after try-outs?
The training committee reviews all potential members and will choose skaters whose drive, skills, and personality they think are a good fit for the Big Easy Rollergirls. New skaters are granted a provisional membership during their first six week probationary training period. After that, skaters start a three – six month basic training program which includes multiple levels of assessments and testing at the end of which lies team placement.

Our fresh meat program helps ease skaters into the consuming world of roller derby, help maintain and grow your fitness level, become more stable and skilled, and ensure you have skills needed to be able to compete on one of BERG’s teams. Lots of new skaters want to know off the bat when they get a name. That should be the very last concern on a potential or new skater’s mind. Learn the game first, then worry about your name and a bout-fit. Remember, we’re athletes before anything else. The fishnets are just a detail.

I play for another roller derby league. What do I do?
The Big Easy Rollergirls have established a transfer process for skaters that are moving to the area from other roller derby leagues or for regional skaters who also would like to compete on a WFTDA team. If you are currently skating with another league, you may not need to tryout for BERG. Please email membership@bigeasyrollergirls.com for specifics and to find out whether you qualify as a transfer skater.

What type of commitment does it take?
We’ll be honest; playing roller derby with the Big Easy Rollergirls is like a part-time (and sometimes even full-time) job. It is not for the faint of heart, nor the inflexible or full-of-schedule. These are just some of the basic league requirements for membership:

Participate in at least two to four, 2-hour min. practices per week
Meet your minimum league committee work each month including but not limited to fundraising, bout production, & flyering
Provide timely payment of monthly league dues – $35 (prices subject to change)
Provide timely payment of Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) insurance – $75 (for 16 months’ coverage, also subject to change)
Wear proper safety gear (helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, knee gaskets, knee pads, and wrist guards)
Read and understand the official WFTDA derby rules
Primary medical insurance recommended
Willingly adhere to the BERG & WFTDA Skater Code of Conduct
Have a ton of moxie, determination, and a nice smile

Are there a lot of injuries?
To be blunt: yes. Roller derby is a high impact, super aggressive, full contact sport. BERG’s training committee does everything possible to prevent as many injuries as possible (by spending lots of time on how to skate safely) but unfortunately the reality of the sport is not so much if you get injured but when.

As mentioned above, full protective gear is required for all skaters (and refs!) and we follow that rule strictly. Although primary health insurance is not currently required if you want to skate with us, every skater (and ref!) is covered under a roller sports insurance. This supplemental insurance is extremely affordable and is required. But, primary health insurance is still strongly recommended.

What if I don’t make try-outs or I’m not ready yet?
Don’t worry, keep skating! It can take months or even years to become a strong roller derby skater. If you miss this round of tryouts or don’t quite make the cut, keep working hard to prepare for the next one. Don’t be discouraged, many current Big Easy Rollergirls tried out more than once.

five things you don't about us: a list

1. Peep this: at practice last night, Bang Crosby was my assist when I jammed. She cleared the OUTSIDE of the pack for me. She was the sandwich meat to my wonder bread. And I made it through (with NO major penalties)!

2. I could bench press 7,000 lbs I think.

3. All Stars are going to KILL Alamo City on September 17th!
(See, BERG played Alamo City in the Governor's Cup Tournament at the very beginning of the season in February. Score was 142-98 BERG! Talk about momentum!)

4. We're thinking about game play and strategy ALL THE TIME. I'm looking at my WTFDA rule book that I keep in my skate bag right now. There's 84 pages in that! Confused about what you see during a bout sometimes? Check out this video from Bitchesbruze- you can see how Steel City delays the jam whistle from being called for 19 seconds, for starters.

5. We train all the time. During the last week's marsh fire, we trained inside my house. It was epic. I looked proudly at my sweaty teammates doing crunches, cardio, pushups, and burpees all over the house. When its not marsh-firing or tropical storming, we train in a warehouse (pictured below, at Diet Choke's birthday celebration).

It's huge and gnarly. And awesome. There's dirt and grime on the parts of the floor that we haven't scrubbed. Exposed sawed-off pipes. Katrina watermark. Disco ball. And a port-o-potty in the back for when we have to pee.

Get Ready to Rollerbull!

Look out! This rollergirl is excited to break out the bat this Saturday! I've been crafting my horns and juicing up the bat all week. The annual Running of the bulls is going to be awesome!

It goes down this Saturday (July 9th) at 8am. Runners take off from Ernst Cafe in the CBD. Come check it out!

Also, congrats to our Crescent Wenches who road tripped up to Lafayette this past weekend to meet the Acadiana Rollergirls on their home turf. What else is there to say... the Wenches brought home the boudin!

But that wasn't the only derby action to go down! In fact BERG has been jetsetting this month. Two weekends before, both the All Stars and the Wenches traveled up to Knoxville, Tennessee to take on the Hard Knox Rollergirls.

Both teams played hard... real meaning was brought to the term "blood on the flat track." In the end, the Hard Knox All Stars bested BERG, but the Crescent Wenches came out ahead of the Hard Knox Brawlers. Great derby all around!

As if that wasn't enough derby (and let's be honest, is there such a thing as "enough derby"), just one weekend before that the Wenches were on the track against our nearby rivals, the Pearl River Derby Swamp Dolls! After another hard fought evening of derby madness, the Wenches did the home team proud ending with the win!

Whew! It's been a busy couple weeks for BERG! So here's a quick wrap up...

The All Stars are rock stars... 'nuff said. In a nail biter of a bout, the All Stars bested out the New Jax City Rollers of Jacksonville 121 to 119. Holy Smokes! It came down to the very last Jam. Coalminer Slaughter showed us the meaning of grace under pressure gaining lead jammer and cinching the win!

Congrats to two debut skaters who made their BERG premier in the May 15th bout between The Crescent Wenches and the Molly Rogers Roller Girls. Sadist Hawkins and Lezbionic brought the pain in a hard scrabble match up!

But that's not enough derby! The All Stars took it on the road to bout against the Mississippi Rollergirls of Gulfport on May 21st. There was worry that Judgement Day might cut the action short, but lucky for us, we brought some divine intervention!

But BERG is more than just skating! We support many other athletic endeavors. Like running... with beer! Friday May 20th, BERG was out in force pouring brews for thirsty runners in the Tchoupitoulas Bar-a-thon!

This Saturday, April 16th is our Season Opener against Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls! First the Big Easy All Stars take on the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls Flatliners, followed by the Crescent Wenches battling it out with the Bleeding Heartland Code Blue Assassins!

Doors open at 5:00pm, Action starts at 6:00pm!

Both skating and non-skating positions are open to guys and girls - and if you want to skate, they will teach you how! For skating refs you must have eagle-eyes, booming voices, and basic skating skills. They are also looking for dedicated, non-skating officials who can help keep detailed statistics. For these positions you are required to have a keen mind, loud voice and basic math skills (no counting on the fingers).

There is a reason why the Superdome is feared by other teams. It is the fans, the 12th man. The question isn’t “how ya gonna clap?”, its “how damn loud can you be?”

Printed on tri-blend, this Saints pride shirt comes in all sizes for men and women and is only $25.

The 12th man is a term commonly used to describe the fans within a stadium during football (soccer) or American football games. Since most football leagues allow a maximum of eleven players per team on the playing field at a time, the term denotes the attempt of a team’s fans to help their team. In American football, the term is trademarked by and originated with Texas A&M University in 1922.

Fundraiser for MS

The Big Easy Rollergirls and The Rolling Elvi are once again climbing on their bikes and joining forces to raise money for The National Multiple Sclerosis Society in their Louisiana Bike MS event. Our fearless BERG and Elvi will ride 150 miles in two days in an attempt to eradicate this debilitating disease.

On Friday, September 24th they will be hosting a fundraiser at Finn McCools located at 3701 Banks Street. They will have a bevy of games: Full-Contact musical chairs, Flip Cup, Twister, Jeopardy, and The Dating Game with BERG and Elvi!

Fleur de Lethal, who also participated in last year's run, states, As a derby player, 80% of the time it's about getting up after getting knocked out of bounds. It's part of the game I choose to play. For someone with MS, getting knocked out of bounds is not something cured. It affects every aspect of their life, it's unpredictable and it wasn't asked for. I've registered for the MS Bike Tour because I want to do something for the people who have been diagnosed - and because I want to do everything to prevent more people from learning what it means to live with this disease.

Rematch Bout!

This Saturday, September 11th the Crescent Wenches face off against one their regional rival, the Red Stick Roller Derby All-Stars of Baton Rouge.

Last time, Red Stick was triumphant over the Wenches 144-100 but the Wenches have been tightening their screws and are ready for a rematch!

The battle takes place at the Human Performance Center on the University of New Orleans Campus, located at the corner of Elysian Fields and Leon C. Simon Drive.

Doors open at 6:00 pm, action starts at 7.

Advance tickets are available ONLINE for $12 or $15 at the door. Kids 6 and under are free, and 12 and under are $6.

This Saturday, August 28th The BERG Allstars and Crescent Wenches mix it up on the track as the Shrimp v. Oysters in a bout to benefit the Coalition to Restore Coastal LA.

This epic seafood showdown on skates takes place at UNO's Human Performance Center located at the corner of Leon C. Simon and Elysian Fields.

The doors open at 6PM and action starts at 7PM.

Tickets are $12 IN ADVANCE ONLINE, $15 at the door, and $6 for kids 12 and under.

Our 2009 Fleur de Wheelie Volunteer of the Year Winner, Frank Hopkins will be generously shaving off his locks at halftime to benefit our beautiful Gulf Coast.

Taking care of business will be New Orleans' own Rolling Elvi!

I have always been attracted to art that contemplates themes of childhood from the whimsical to the somewhat twisted. When I was considering how to mark my tenth anniversary with the gallery I thought this would be a perfect theme for a show. Growing Pains reflects upon growing up: the good and the bad. Some of the works reveal artists’ childhood memories while others draw on fictional narratives of youth

Crusty took this opportunity to include artists who have never shown at LeMieux Galleries and a few artists that live outside of the gulf coast region.

It's The Big Easy Rollergirls' first bout of the year!

The season opens with a double-header beginning at 6pm on March 6th, 2010 at UNO's HPC Center located at the corner of Elysian Fields and Leon C. Simon Drive. The HPC offers nearly 15,550 square feet of playing surface, telescopic bleacher seating for up to 1,200 fans, concessions booths, and a balcony area for aerial viewing.

The Crescent Wenches start the action at 6PM with a new roster of our toughest rookies. Watch all the action as they host the Dixie Derby Girls of Huntsville, Alabama.

At 7pm, the Big Easy All Stars take on the Northwest Arkansas Killbillies of Fayetteville.

Enjoy the bout, and a Nola Brew, the official beer of the Big Easy Rollergirls.

Doors open at 5 pm. $12 ADVANCE TICKETS, $15 at the door, $6 for kids 5 and up.

Enjoy a whole season of derby for only $75. Individual tickets to the eight bouts this season would cost would $96 - that's a $21 savings for all the derby you can handle!

Tryouts Recap

In January, The Big Easy Rollergirls held tryouts for spots in our league.

Over 50 girls came out to see if they had what it takes to strap on skates and become a rollergirl.

Rookies and Vets ran The Fresh Meat through some drills: basic skating, time trials, stops and falls. All of the women performed amazingly well! There were even some standout stars!

Membership manager Deb U Taunt stated, "We saw a lot of great talent and potential and can't wait to get started training with the fresh meat. Fans watch out, we have some new rollerstars on our hands!"

The Big Easy Rollergirls are rolling again in THE KREWE OF MUSES on Thursday, February 11th at 6:30 PM.

We are thrilled that once again, Muses is extending their parade route!

The parade will start at Magazine and Jefferson, and will proceed down Magazine to Napoleon, where we will fall in behind Babylon and Chaos and pick up the traditional route. Babylon and Chaos will start as usual on Napoleon.

And once again, The Big Easy Rollergirls will have special throws, beads, and if you're lucky, one-of-a-kind decorated wheels!

Mystic Knights of Adonis

They will be debuting their own ADONIS DOUBLOON, and a Captain’s Doubloon.

They have as their Grand Marshal, David Bologna, direct from Broadway, just completing his role as Michael in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot the Musical. We will also be joined by 15 bands and marching groups, and the LA Rough Riders.

Last year, The Big Easy Rollergirls were fortunate to welcome two veteran skaters from other leagues: Bang Crosby and Peaches Rodriquez, as well as a new referee Johnny Crash.

Bang, Johnny & Peaches

Bang moved here from Austin, Texas in October. She started skating in March of 2008 with the Texas Rollergirls Rec-n-Rollerderby. In September 2008, she tried out for The Texas Rollergirls and was drafted by the Hotrod Honeys. The Hotrods, two-time Texas Rollergirls Champs, are renowned for their teamwork and hardcore training. Bang learned to play derby with some of the best skaters in the country, including Rice Rocket, Cat Tastrophe, Vicious Van GoGo, Lucille Brawl and Crackerjack. She also learned a lot of the business of running a derby league as an assistant to Rice Rocket and Electra Blu, the Chief Operating Officers, and later as Program Coordinator of the Rec-n-Rollerderby and the Texas Rollergirls Junior League.

The Hotrods only lost one game in the season Bang played with them, and it was against the Oly Rollers Cosa Nostra Donnas (Current WFTDA Champs).

My scariest and favorite moment on the track was lining up against D-Bomb and coming out of it alive. My first bout was against the Nashville Rollergirls All-Stars. I was nervous and excited and the crowd of 1200 people booed us and we won 156-40. It was a great night. I learned so much and had so many wonderful experiences with the Hotrods, but I'm definitely still learning my place on the track.

Bang usually plays Blocker 2 or 3, and hopes to play pivot and jammer as well, with Big Easy. Currently, Bang serves on The Training Committe and Interleague Committee.

My goal for our league is to really come together, skate hard, and make it to Regionals.

Peaches transferred from Tucson Roller Derby/TRD in Tucson, AZ. TRD is the Third oldest Roller-Derby League in the World. She started skating for TRD during it's 2005/2006 Season and was placed on it's flagship Team the Furious Truckstop Waitresses as well as their Travel Team the Tucson Saddletramps. At the end of the 2008/2009 Season, Peaches received the "FTW Best Jammer", "FTW Best Pivot" and "FTW MVP" Awards.

Following a total of eight months off of skates, Peaches transferred to BERG and returned to Roller-Derby.

I am very excited about playing for BERG and the Southern Region. I would very much like to see the Southern Region become as competitive and fierce as it's Western and Eastern counterparts and want to help BERG however possible to smash it's way to the top of the Southern Rankings. I and am very grateful to have been given the chance to be a skating representative of the great City of New Orleans and fully intend to give BERG and NOLA everything and anything I am physically able.

Aside from her expertise, Peaches also brought along her husband Johnny Crash.

Johnny was TRD's Head Ref for over 2 Years. He is one of only five Level 4 WFTDA Certified Referees in the country! In 2005, Johnny officiated at the very First Dust Devil in Tucson, AZ (Roller-Derby's very first National Tournament), as well as the Second Dust Devil in 2006. He Reffed at WFTDA Nationals, the Texas Shoot-Out in Austin TX. in 2007 and the WFTDA Nationals, the Northwest Knockdown held in Portland, Or. in 2008. Johnny has also Reffed at least 7 Regional Tournaments across the country and truly is one of the most experienced Roller-Derby refs in the world.
Johnny's first trip to New Orleans, LA was for the WFTDA Rules Conference in 2007 (NO-CON).

It's a tough, rough, exhilarating job, but someone's gotta do it.

And that someone could be you!

The Big Easy Rollergirls are having tryouts on Thursday, January 14th at The Westbank Skate Country on 1100 Terry Parkway in Gretna.

From 6:00 to 8:30PM the rollergirls will teach you some of the basic skills of roller derby.

No skating experience necessary.

Drive and determination are the key factors.

If you don't have skates you can rent them at the rink. Rollergirls will let you use their gear, but please bring your own mouth guard.

Lastly, if this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, consider volunteering! It is a great way to be involved and become part of the BERG family.

Who Dat in the Oaks?

Come celebrate the holiday season and The New Orleans' Saints (the city's second-favorite team next to The Big Easy Rollergirls) at Celebration in the Oaks in City Park.

On Saturday, December 19th, cheer The Saints on to their next victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Stroll through the 23rd annual Celebration in the Oaks and then watch the big game at 7PM on two big screen TVs at The Holiday Cafe and Celebration Cafe. Those dressed in Black & Gold get $1 off the $7 admission.

Cocktails for K9s and Felines

Please support The Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) in their annual fundraiser. ARNO is an organization created and dedicated to the rescue and aid of abandoned and homeless animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi, including responding to the immediate needs of those animals in need of medical care, or who have been neglected, abused and deprived of love. ARNO promotes the foster, adoption and reunion of pets with caretakers, as well as spaying/neutering of all companion animals.

This Friday, December 18th from 6 to 9PM they are hosting a Cocktails for K9s and Felines at the Creole Gardens Guest House located at 1415 Prytania.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A ROLLERGIRL?

It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it and that someone could be you!

We are offering a skating clinic December 10th at The Westbank Skate Country located at 1100 Terry Parkway from 6:00 to 8:30pm. This clinic will help you get started on the basic skills of derby: falling, stopping, crossovers, maneuvering around objects, and, of course, skating! The cost is only $15.

Our rollergirls will let you use their skates, pads, but please provide your own mouth guard. We will teach you how to skate, you just need to bring your drive and determination.

We are holding our next league tryouts on January 14th from 6:00 - 8:30pm at Skate Country.

So, if you can commit to regular skating practices, monthly participation in bouts, pay dues and get your own gear... Then contact us to reserve your spot for the clinic and tryouts!

Canal Street Krewe of Kringle Parade

Come out for The Canal Street Krewe of Kringle Parade on Saturday, December 5th.

The parade rolls at 11AM from the Convention Center Blvd up Canal Street and past the Roosevelt Hotel Grand Reviewing Stands at Baronne Street.

Aside from your favorite rollergirls on skates, the parade will also include sky-high, stilt walking candy canes, marching bands, mascots from the Hornets, Saints, and Zephyrs, the Honeybees and the pint-sized Stingers, the Rolling Elvi, pageant queens, Muff-A-Lottas, and of course, the most venerable Canal Street character of all, Mr. Bingle!

The outdoor holiday concert will begin at approximately 12:00 noon, directly following the parade.

Jeremy Davenport of the Davenport Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Tim Laughlin of the Roosevelt Hotel will be joined by local female vocalists as well as the gospel music group Shades of Praise.

Kermit Ruffins will also make a special guest appearance!

HAMP FEST!

HAMP FEST is a revolutionary new NOLA music festival geared at raising awareness and funding to help fight HIV in New Orleans.

This first annual benefit music festival will be donating all profits to NOLA HIV agencies.

Regular tickets are $15 online at The Howling Wolf or $20 at the door, VIP tickets are $75 and include free drinks and food on NOLA Brewing, Firefly Vodka, and Maya's restaurant.

The Big Easy Rollergirls will be there with special appearances by KRE of the Rolling Elvi, The Pussyfooters, Zulu, Phat Phat and All That, and Fleur De Tease.

With a bagpipe-led parade, traditional scavenger hunt, fortunetelling, tarot card reading, vodka tasting, and even a kielbasa-eating contest, St. Andrew's Day will transform Bacchanal into a mystical wonderland of infinite delights!

NEWBIE BOUT RECAP!

On November 14th, sixteen of our newbies skated in their debut bout.
The Wild Turkeys took on Santa’s Slayers.

Captained by Nasty, The Wild Turkeys’ roster included: Ammeaux, Anne GoLA, Herculetta, Megumi Nasty, Rogue Roulet, Roxy Monoxide, Snake, Turbo Doll, and veteran skater lacy underalls with bench coaches Crusty McKnuckle and ChessTosterone.

Captained by Afro, Santa’s Slayers roster included: Afro-F'N-Die-T, Combats Domino, DauFiend, Marilyn Merlot, Menopause Maniac, Quasi-MoFo, Tchouper, Vieux Careen, and veteran skater Beatrix sKiddo with bench coaches MILF Duds and Deb U Taunt.

With both teams evenly matched, The Turkeys took an early five-point lead. The Slayers fought back with consistent blocking and scoring. Both teams demonstrated excellent pack awareness and strong hitting.

In the end, while the Slayers shut down the Turkeys in the final jam, it was still not enough for them to gain the lead and The Turkeys were victorious with a final score of 31 to 29. As proud bench coach, Chess pointed out “The turkeys didn't let their feathers get too ruffled; the first rule of zen derby!”

Vieux also scored the most points overall for a total of 15; almost half of her team’s points! Vieux was also pleased with her debut bout. “I loved being able to play and I had the time of my life! I loved the adrenaline and the competitiveness of the whole event. Afro, our fearless leader, helped build up the confidence of our team, which motivated me to go out and do my best! Afro is a rockstar!”

Congratulations to all of our newbie skaters who broke, shattered, and burst their bout cherries. You played hard and clean, and made us all very proud.

Come out and support your local artists!

For over ten years, ARTDOCS has provided medical care to visual artists, writers and perfomring artists in New Orleans who lack health coverage. Since 1999, ARTDOCS has seen over 2500 artist patients providing routine care and other important medical services.

On Thursday, November 19th they will be holding a live auction at 851 Magazine Street. There will be music, art, fire-eaters, circus performers, and The Big Easy Rollergirls.

DJ Soul Sister starts at 6:30 PM.

The auction starts at 7:30 PM.

Tickets are available at the door: $15 individuals/$25 couples.

ARTDOCS provides healthcare services to full-time artists in the New Orleans area who are uninsured or under-insured and whose income falls below 2 times the 2009 federal poverty level of $10,830. This means any uninsured artist in New Orleans currently making under $21,660 now qualifies for the program.

ARTDOCS will cover the costs of office visits with a family physician, including associated lab fees.

Who do the Voodoo? We do!

The Big Easy Rollergirls will be at the entrance of The Voodoo Experience every day of the festival from 10 to 11am, 1 to 2pm, and 4-5pm. We will be skating in front of the New Orleans Art Museum on 1 Collin Diboll Circle. We will have flyers and tickets to sell. You can also catch us skating around the festival - be careful of our hip checks!

On Saturday, October 10th The Big Easy Rollergirls faced off against the Southern Misfits Rollergirls of Petal, MS in our first lagniappe season game at the UNO Human Performance Center.

Our charity was HandsOn New Orleans. HandsOn has evolved from a disaster response project into a thriving resource center for grassroots service project by launching an array of new programs; including a Tool Lending Library, a Youth Engagement Corps, and no-cost Volunteer Leader Trainings. We held a 50/50 raffle to benefit this local organization.

The bout action started immediately with Wit Vicious dominating as jammer. She scored 45 points in the first period, almost half of BERG points - and in only 3 jams! Wit had the most points scored in a jam with 20!

Animal, lacy, and Betty kept control of the pack as pivots.

ChessTosterone, Deb, and MILF delivered some powerful hits in the pack.

The Southern Misfits rallied in the second half scoring 80% of their points, but were still unable to gain enough points for a victory. The final score was 192-48.

Whip It Movie Premiere!

The Big Easy Rollergirls will be guest stars on Wednesday, September 30th for The Whip It Movie Premiere at Elmwood AMC 20 Palace Theatre on 1200 Elmwood Park Blvd.

We will be there at 6:30pm for a meet and greet, and a quick Q&A before the film. The film starts at 7:30pm.

Tonight, some of the rollergirls will pass out premiere movie tickets and Whip It schwag in the CBD at LePhare on 523 Gravier Street starting at 10pm.

If you miss them tonight, you can get your tickets and swag tomorrow night, Saturday, September 26th, when more of the rollergirls will be at Club Voila on 300 Decatur Street from 5pm to 7pm.

One pass admits two. Seating is limited, tickets are not a guarantee of admission. Please come early.

Whip It is released by Fox Searchlight and features the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (a woman who embodies the rollergirl psyche and substance). It stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small-town beauty pageant crown to throw down on the roller rink.

Written by Shauna Cross, a former Roller Derby skater with the Los Angeles Derby Dolls. Cross skated under the name Maggie Mayhem with a team of rouge cops called the Sirens. Many of the teams, skaters, names and plot lines were inspired by Cross' time with the Derby Dolls. She was named by Variety Magazine as 10 Screenwriters to Watch! We are so proud of her! Go Shauna!

The film opens nationwide on Friday, October 2nd.

Walk That Extra Mile!

On Saturday, September 26th, members of The Big Easy Rollergirls and The Krewe of The Rolling Elvi are going to walk that Extra Mile in Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority.

The walk takes place at Lafreniere Park in Metairie located at 3000 Downs Blvd.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Tent near the Park Center Pavilion.

The Walk Starts at 9 a.m. The track is two miles long.

The Extra Mile is a statewide network of professional staff and volunteers dedicated to enhancing and enriching the quality of life for all persons served by public human services agencies. Since 1991, these non-profit organizations have helped persons served by the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority, Metropolitan Human Services District, Florida Parishes Human Services District, and the State Offices of Mental Health, Public Health, Citizens with Developmental Disabilities, and Addictive Disorders. The Extra Mile programs across the state provide education, support, advocacy, monetary assistance, and program development to fill needs as determined by individual communities. These resources include the time and talent of many dedicated volunteers and donors working together to provide clothing, food, merchandise, in kind services from individuals and businesses, support for individuals and families, community education, advocacy and cash.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:

Share a special talent or interest you may have…be a friend.
Advocate for persons who have human services needs.
Educate your family and friends about mental illness, addictive disorders, and developmental disabilities. Personal experience and stories are the most effective.

The Big Easy Rollergirls are gearing up for their October 10th bout at UNO's Human Performance Center and we want you to be involved!

REQUIREMENTS: Be reliable, punctual, and have a "Viva La Derby" attitude!

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to the following: track assembly, ticket takers, handing out programs, directing foot-traffic, and merch sales.

In exchange for your awesome derby spirit, you will be able to see part of the action on bout day, get to meet and mingle with the Rollergirls, and receive a free ticket to a future event.

We are holding a Volunteer Seminar with Victoria von Doom, Thursday, October 8th at 7:30 pm at Skate Country, located at 1100 Terry Parkway.

The two teams have traded in their skates and scooters for spokes and joined the Louisiana Multiple Sclerosis Society for the annual Bike MS150 on October 3rd and 4th of 2009.

The bike ride is 150 miles over two days and all the funds raised will go toward supporting research projects, education programs and other special projects designated by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
